When cycling, most of your body weight rests on the small saddle surface. To prevent discomfort in the sitting area, the pressure is distributed as evenly as possible over the sit bones. Gel pads are inlayed in specific ergonomic positions to help alleviate pressures under these bony structures.
When it comes to saddle contact points and relief areas, men and women are anatomically very different. Any incorrect pressure distribution in this area often leads to feelings of numbness and discomfort. Men experience this more towards the back of the saddle and women, more towards the front of the saddle. Through extensive research and development, two distinctly different designs were born. The two distinctly different designs share the common goal of maximum comfort.
The shape and size of the saddle must match the sit bone width of the rider to maximize comfort and enjoyment. The pelvis is V-shaped and the saddle must offer the sit bones a large contact surface while being able to meet the demands of different sitting positions. The more forward and aggressive the rider sits, the further forward the sit bones contact the saddle. Two saddle sizes are offered to match the rider’s unique sit bone width.
As a touring cyclist, you sit on the saddle in a much more upright position. The ST Gel is designed to match this posture.
The typical flat and wide saddles that are common on fitness bikes can contribute to discomfort. The ST Gel has a supportive yet not overdone design to give you specific support where you need it the most. Notable features that aid to this saddle’s comfort are the orthopedic foam and gel pads. Additionally, the sides of the saddle are particularly soft to alleviate any unnecessary pressures along the inner thighs.
In order to provide the maximum prevention of saddle discomfort, Ergon developers focussed on main comfort qualities to enhance the fitness or touring riders‘ experience. These qualities include the construction of the saddle surface, the structure of the saddle supportive material, the saddle shell and the ergonomically anatomical relief channel. The difference is in the details.
The most enjoyable bicycle tour is when there is no distractions of unnecessary saddle pressure or friction. If your thighs rub against the front of the saddle when pedaling, this can quickly end the enjoyment of your ride. The saddle nose of the ST Gel has a narrow cut, giving you the best possible legroom when cycling and prevents any unnecessary rubbing.
The padding of the ST Gel is made of orthopedic comfort foam, which we have designed for fitness bikes, e-bikes and touring bikes. The foam is supportive, soft, but does not collapse. In addition to the foam, specific gel pad inlays offer even more comfort under the sitting area. With this saddle, it is not absolutely necessary to wear cycling shorts. The saddle is covered with robust microfiber to prevent abrasions and maintain the durability of the saddle.
